Team Bio: Nick Bal

Nick Bal, Vice President of Advancement, The FAMiLY LEADER

Nick Bal lives in Ames, Iowa, with his wife, Carol, and daughters Ava and Amelia. Bal graduated from Iowa State with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Communication and a Masters in Public Administration from Drake. Bal enjoys playing tennis and being involved at his church, Crossroad Baptist in Ames.

Bal is the owner of Slingshot Consultant Company, and prior to his work with TFL was the director of donor ministries at The Gospel Coalition, director of development for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State, associate pastor at Willow Creek Baptist Church, campus missionary for the Great Commission Ministry, assistant director of annual funds at Drake, and assistant director of alumni and parent programs at Drake.

Bal appreciated the work of TFL when it was known as the Iowa Family Policy Center, but it wasn’t until a few years ago he had the opportunity to visit the TFL offices and meet with Bob Vander Plaats. Bal says he was “truly able to see the vision,” so when the opening for a position in advancement arose, he contacted Bob to see if he would be a right fit for their team.

Bal is passionate about joining TFL and the work it’s doing, saying, “I wake up every day and get excited about going in. The culture brings me joy, and opening every morning in prayer plays a major role in that.”

Bal also likes that TFL’s advocacy of the sanctity of life and families may actually lead to people’s lives being saved: “What we’re working on blesses people, and there’s people who don’t realize that they’ve been blessed by The FAMiLY LEADER.”

Favorite Bible verse: 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 – “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.’”
