BIG NEWS! Heartbeat legislation advances

At the Iowa Capitol today, new life was pumped into efforts to ban abortions after a baby’s heartbeat can be detected.

A subcommittee of the Iowa House Human Resources Committee recommended an amendment to SF359 (a bill prohibiting sale of baby body parts), inserting “Heartbeat” language into the bill. The subcommittee chair then recommended the bill as amended to the full committee.

The bill will now move on to the full Human Resources Committee, which is scheduled for one, final meeting before the Legislature’s self-imposed “second funnel” deadline of March 16. The committee is currently scheduled to meet Thursday at 2 p.m.

This means pro-life Iowans like you have less than 24 hours left to encourage your legislator to pass Heartbeat legislation before the crucial deadline.

Should SF359 be passed through the full Human Resources Committee tomorrow and floor of the House in the coming weeks, the bill would yet need to be reconciled with the Iowa Senate version, passed last year, before it reaches the governor’s desk.
